Filming Communities You Come From — insight

Access is not consent, and proximity is not permission — notes on ethical documentary practice at home.

Some of the hardest documentary ethics questions arise not abroad but at home — filming communities you belong to, stories your family lived. Familiarity earns access, but access is not consent.

Our practice: explain the film before the camera appears. Screen rough cuts to the people in them. Translate release forms into plain language and mean them. Pay contributors for their time and say so openly.

Proximity is an advantage and a responsibility. The camera that knows the room must still respect it. When in doubt, we slow down — the story will wait for trust.

These are not constraints on the work. They are the work. An audience can feel the difference between extraction and collaboration in every frame.
